Gather Vol. 1: New Beginnings

Gather Vol. 1: New Beginnings

As April draws to a close we exhale, grateful for the glimmers of summer this month has brought. While the garden — and the farmers, no doubt — yearn for rain, we have enjoyed every bit of sunshine after what felt like a long winter. The weather really seemed to chime with our own new beginning, affirming the change of season and the unmistakable arrival of spring.

The trees and hedgerows, bare at the beginning of the month, are now so lush with their young green foliage. One of our favourites — the lilac trees — are in full bloom. That ever so brief, ever so beautiful blossom, with a scent unlike any other, announces spring like nothing else can.

From the Journal

With the heady scent of lilac and that certain slant of light that the longer evenings carry, we celebrated the launch of Metta. Prompted by our own new beginning, we found ourselves thinking about what draws us to beginnings at all — and whether that feeling is something we can choose, on any ordinary day. Find the essay Beginning again, and again, and again in our Journal.

Meanwhile over on the grid, we shared some facts about lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus). Did you know that the compound that gives lemongrass its bright citrus note — citral — is also what a honeybee releases to call a swarm home?
